NPL MATCH REPORTS – Round 8 vs Charlestown

Lisle Carr Oval

Under 13’s

A cool start to the drive for everyone involved on Sunday morning to Lisle Carr Oval in Charlestown. The temperature stayed low with the westerly breeze sweeping across the oval for the start of the game. The usual mix of banter between parents and supporters warmed the stands up for the eighth round clash of the NPL 13’s.

The boys were off to their slow start as usual after the three hour drive. An early sub by the award winning coach proved the difference, with the new boys running out the message to pick it up.

After a goal towards the end of the first half, the commitment and flow between the team gelled and the boys were on their way for another win. Charlestown’s goalkeeper stood in the way from the score being much higher than 4-0 with a stellar performance in keeping.

Benny Oakley had a goal late in the game which has been years in the making and was rushed for celebration by the rest of the boys who were so surprised to see him playing so far out of position.

Well done to all involved on the day.

Final result was a 4-0 victory to FMNC.

Mother’s Day saw FMNC 14s NPL squad make the journey to Lisle Carr Oval to play Charlestown.

With conditions that were more favorable than in the previous week’s game the boys were keen to play for the win. From the start, they set about passing the ball around and dominating possession.

Despite placing early pressure on the Charlestown keeper, the first goal didn’t come until the 20th minute following determined play through the midfield. With the score at 1 nil, the boys continued to progress the ball down the sidelines and were rewarded with a second goal finding the target.  FMNC 14s went into the half time break with a 2 nil lead.

The second half proved to be a more physical game with Charlestown marking tighter, forcing our boys to focus on possession and ball control. FMNC 14s maintained their focus and continued to dominate the play with two quick goals occurring within the first 5 minutes taking the score to 4 nil.

Despite maintaining pressure on the Charlestown players and their goal keeper, FMNC did not add any further goals to the scoreboard leaving the full time score at 4 nil.

Coach Darrell Pascoe reported that he was pleased with the boy’s game indicating that they had followed the game plan from training and had shifted the ball around the field well.

Final score 4-0 to FMNC.

FMNC travelled to Charlestown on Sunday with not really knowing what to expect. Charlestown’s results have been very inconsistent so far.

FMNC started fast and created a few half-chances, but with no reward at the end. The boys pushed hard and finally about the 20 minute mark Chai Davies broke through down the left side into the box and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper. That’s the way it stayed till half time. Charlestown didn’t have a shot on goal.

The second half started the same way but faded quickly. After missing a few chances FMNC started playing the same way as Charlestown which looked very unorganised. The patient game they normally played was gone. With the game finishing 1-0 FMNC were never really troubled but it made everyone nervous until the final whistle.

Final score 1-0 to FMNC.

Game away hosted by Charlestown saw the FMNC 17s keen to gain the 3 points on offer.

From the kick off they started very well controlling the play for the first 20 mins of the half. They created 2 fantastic goal scoring opportunities, one from Logan Palmer and one from Dylan Webber only to be denied by a very well positioned Charlestown keeper.

In the 20th min against the run of play, Charlestown were awarded a free kick 10m outside of the box.  The free kick was converted to go ahead 1-0. 10 mins later FMNC dropped their heads further when Charlestown struck again to go ahead 2-0 .

The half time debrief from Coach Grassy redirected the FMNC boys, coming out of the sheds and starting the 2nd half as they had in the 1st. Dominating the game, finding feet with their passing and working as a unit. Luck failed to find them though as Charlestown found the net again in the 53rd min to go 3-0 up.

Right there the game was in a balance. They could have dropped their bundle and conceded more goals but they showed great determination and team spirit to peg a goal back in the 70th min. A great run into the box from Nick Wright directing a low angled cross to set up Dylan Webber to finish. 3-1 down with 10 to play.

FMNC were well and truly still in the game. The clock getting the better of us with 3-1 to Charlestown being the final score. Special mention to Nick Wright who put in all game.

Although no competition points were won on the day it was fantastic to see the determination, grit and commitment to each other to draw the second half 1-1. When the boys put it together for the full 80 mins, look out. It’s not far away.

Final score 3-1 to Charlestown.
