NPL Round 18 vs Maitland

July 27th, 2016

Saturday 23rd July 2016
Maitland Park

Under 13’s

Round 18 saw Maitland host FMNC at Maitland Park. The weather was more like a Siberian winter, with a wind chill factor of about -20.

Well, the first half whistle blew and so did the wind.  FMNC were off to a cracking start, dominating possession and camping in Maitland’s half. The cross-field winds, at this time, compromised the tactics of both teams. Midway through the first half FMNC created a play with a nice pass from the midfield which played a through ball to the frontline, allowing our forwards to capitalise and score a well deserved goal (FMNC 1-0).

Not long after, while under sustained pressure, a poorly placed kick by one of the Maitland backs went into the net for an own goal (FMNC 2-0).  The half time whistle blew and the players came off the field with what looked like hairstyles from the 80’s.

The second half started with the gale force winds not relenting.  Maitland started with more intensity, but as FMNC got into a rhythm the final battle began. Maitland were gaining more metres with their plays but were unable to capitalise with shots on goals. Finally, after a number of through balls to the forwards, FMNC were able to take a clear shot at goal when one of our boys was left unmarked (FMNC 3-0).

Maitland continued with quite a determined display but unfortunately to no avail. Well done to both teams who played well considering the trying conditions.

Final score – FMNC 3 Maitland 0

Under 14s

Saturday saw a ridiculously early start for the longer than normal trip to Maitland. On our arrival we were literally blown away by the incredibly strong winds.

From the kick off, MNC dominated possession all be it down one side of the field. With passing accuracy and ball control being difficult, MNC looked the better side, penetrating the Maitland defence.

On a day when goal scoring opportunities would be limited, MNC came close to scoring early when a nice shot from midfield couldn’t be gloved by the Maitland keeper. It was pushed out but the rebound was shot over the crossbar.

Minutes later, another two shots from midfield flew over the bar. Then in the 13th minute, a floating cross was put inside the 18 yard box and was neatly tucked away to give MNC the lead.

The pattern of ball possession with good intensity continued for the remainder of the half but didn’t result in another goal.

With the change in half saw a change in the play.

Maitland came out more hungry and then they dominated play. MNC did create chances but couldn’t capitalize.

Even though the boys strayed from the game plan a little, the defence held strong and denied Maitland any goals. On a very difficult day for all involved MNC held on and put in a good effort to secure the points.

Final score – FMNC 1 Maitland 0

Under 17s

Round 18 provided the 17s with a strong chance to take the points on offer against Maitland FC. Maitland got the better of FMNC last time they met but with every outing the boys have shown they are always in the contest.

The weather on the day certainly came to the party as the gate crasher with terrible conditions for all involved. FMNC were the better team on the park but as is the case held possession and the goal just proved too difficult to find.

Big thanks to Max Lynch and Sam Modderno from the 14’s for sitting on the bench and giving their best when they had the opportunity to get on the park.

Final score – FMNC 0 Maitland 0
